lncRNA NKILA: a killer regulator

Tumours can escape immune elimination by favouring the accumulation of protumour T cell subsets, such as regulatory T (Treg) cells and T helper 2 (TH2) cells, over antitumour T cell subsets, such as cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) and TH1 cells. In a comprehensive study published in Nature Immunology, a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) known as nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB)-interacting lncRNA (NKILA) is shown to preferentially sensitize antitumour T cells to cell death following activation by tumour antigens. They show that silencing NKILA increases CTL infiltration and inhibits tumour growth and thus represents a possible approach to enhance the effectiveness of T cells in adoptive T cell therapy for cancer.
