What do Galileo and Lavoisier have in common? Both were renowned “natural philosophers” long before William Whewell, a Cambridge University professor, coined the term “scientist” in the nineteenth century [1]. Today legions of career scientists, trained in well-defined academic pathways, endeavor to discover new disease mechanisms and treatments. Among them are the natural philosophers, like Galileo and Lavoisier, who are driven purely by their curiosity.
