Ninety two children presenting with thrombosis to Hacettepe from October 1995 to December 1998 are the subjects of this study. The incidence of thrombosis was 6.8 per 10.000 hospital admissions. Deep venous thrombosis and cerebral thrombosis were the most common sites of thrombosis. Seventeen children (18.5%) died as a consequence of their underlying disorder including malignancy and infection associated with thrombosis. Seven children (7.6%) had amputation caused by purpura fulminance. Seven children (7.6%) developed late sequelae such as epilepsy and portal hypertension. Recurrent thrombosis occurred in 3 (3.2%) children. Overall frequency of death or late sequelae of thrombosis was 33.7%. The prognosis of thrombosis in childhood is more commonly associated with infections and has a different spectrum of underlying disorders.
