To study the type of immune response (Th-1 or Th-2) during an episode of acute lower respiratory infection caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), we quantified INF-gamma, IL-4 and IL-5 in the supernatants of PHA cultured peripheral blood mononuclear cells in 3 infants without RSV bronchiolitis and 1 infant with RSV bronchiolitis. The IL-4/INF-gamma and the IL-5/INF-gamma in the infant with RSV bronchiolitis was higher than the infants with no episode of RSV bronchiolitis. Our preliminary data suggest that Th-2/Th-1 like cytokine ratio was higher in those with RSV bronchiolitis compared to those without RSV bronchiolitis. Fig 1a, Fig 1b
