Information on health care resource utilization associated with substance use during pregnancy is scarce. An objective of this study was to define health care resource utilization among 11,810 mother/infant dyads, 1,185 who were categorized as exposed (EXP) to cocaine/opiates (C/O) and 10,625 non-exposed (NON) based on maternal history of C/O use or presence of C/O metabolites in meconium by GC/MS assay. MLS study sites were Brown U, U of Miami, U of Tenn Memphis, and Wayne State U; study period was 5/93 to 5/95. Infant resource utilization is reported by birthweight (≤ and>1500g).
Results: Maternal hospitalizations (all causes) and percentage receiving prenatal care did not differ between groups.Table
Conclusion: Health care resource utilization associated with C/O exposure was increased across both BW groups regarding social need, but only in >1500g BW infants regarding medical need.
