Electron Transfer Activation in Polar Media

Abstract

Bockris, Mittal and Sen1 have raised several points criticising the lack of consideration of dielectric saturation and inner sphere effects in the theories of electron transfer reactions2–4. But it was already recognised2,4–6 that the dielectric continuum approximation is inadequate to treat the inner solvent sphere; it is in general more adequately described by considering proper covalent bonds between the central metal ion and the nearest solvent molecules. This was acknowledged in all theories by including the inner solvation sphere in the ionic radius. Later, recognition of all inner degrees of freedom was also taken into account7,8.
