Oxidation of Ferrous Iron in Biotite

Abstract

BIOTITE is an important source of potassium and magnesium as well as many micronutrients in soils developed from granitic parent materials1. The oxidation of octahedrally coordinated ferrous iron during weathering influences the stability of the mineral and the release of ions to soil solution2, and several workers have attempted to oxidize biotite in the laboratory by thermal3,4 and chemical5–8 techniques; in every case, however, the products were not identical to naturally occurring oxidized biotite (oxybiotite).
