Transformation Behaviour in the Mineral Nepheline

Abstract

THE basic structure of the mineral nepheline was refined by Hahn and Buerger1 who described it as a stuffed derivative of tridymite with an idealized formula KNa3Al4Si4O16, space group P63. In addition to the reflexions defining this unit cell, however, extra reflexions were observed by Sahama2 and investigated in detail by McConnell3. These weak, diffuse reflexions have coordinates ±(1/3, 1/3, ±z) in the basic reciprocal space cell, where z is irrational. McConnell3 explained these results in terms of a larger hexagonal unit cell, defined by a′=√3a, c′=c and offstacked by multiples of the subcell repeat according to rather precise probability rules, instead of obeying perfect translational symmetry.
