Abstract
INVESTIGATIONS of the chemical and structural relationships in clinopyroxene crystals reveal information on the crystallization temperatures of the lunar magmas and subsequent cooling rates. Several investigators have studied the rates of crystallization (for example, refs. 1 to 6) and most of them assume rapid crystallization associated with rapid cooling; this is reflected in the rather chaotic chemical trends in the crystals over the CaMgSi2O6-MgSiO3-FeSiO3-CaFeSi2O6 quadrilateral. Much less is known about the cooling history in the subsolidus range.
