A recent study found that mice in which the cannabinoid 1 (CB1) receptor was knocked out in cortical glutamatergic neurons in the dorsal telencephalon (Glu-Cb1−/− mice) ate less after fasting than wild-type mice. Marsicano and colleagues set out to examine whether the link between the endocannabinoid system and food intake involves the olfactory system.

Immunohistochemistry analysis revealed that in contrast to wild-type mice, Glu-Cb1−/− mice showed strongly reduced CB1 receptor expression in the granule cell layer (GCL) of the MOB. This layer largely comprises inhibitory GABAergic neurons that are innervated by glutamatergic neurons from various cortical regions, indicating that, in Glu-Cb1−/− mice, glutamatergic cortical neurons projecting to the MOB lack presynaptic CB1 receptors.
