A paper similar to this Review article was published in Cancer & Metastasis Reviews (CMR) in June 2006 by Richard Essner1, who is one of the authors of this Review by Alistair J. Cochran et al. in Nature Reviews Immunology (NRI). The CMR paper has the same structure and, in places, is identical to the NRI paper. An erratum was published online on 10 July 2008 and in the September 2008 issue of CMR2, which contains Dr Essner's request to retract the paper, an outcome of investigations by the John Wayne Cancer Institute.
The substantially similar paper submitted by Dr Essner to CMR was already being processed for publication at NRI. Dr Essner's submission to CMR did not acknowledge the contribution of the principal author (Cochran) or the other co-authors of the NRI Review and was submitted to CMR without their knowledge. Dr Essner's behaviour in this matter contravenes CMR and NRI guidelines stipulating that papers should not be simultaneously submitted to journals and in the view of the Nature Publishing Group submission of the paper to CMR constituted plagiarism.
