In the past two decades, several new OACs with improved properties have been developed. These drugs are referred to as non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs), and consist of direct activated coagulation factor X (FXa) inhibitors and direct thrombin inhibitors (DTIs), which act at different levels of the coagulation cascade.
