“The population with PAD is a special one,” comments Marc Bonaca, lead investigator of the study. “They have a particularly malignant form of atherosclerosis that manifests in higher rates of cardiovascular events than in patients with myocardial infarction (MI) or stroke and no PAD.” Given that only very few trials have specifically assessed the effect of LDL-cholesterol lowering in patients with PAD, Bonaca and colleagues sought to determine the effect of PCSK9 inhibition on rates of adverse cardiovascular and limb events in this subgroup of patients.
