Helper Function in Antibody Synthesis mediated by Soluble Factor(s)

Abstract

ANTIBODY synthesis against a variety of antigens is dependent on a helper function provided by thymus-derived (T) cells1–3. It has been suggested that helper cells act through direct contact with the antibody-forming B cell3,4 or, alternatively, that T cells release factor(s) capable of promoting antibody synthesis5 on contact with antigen. Such factors, acting in a specific6 or non-specific manner7–12, have been described. We describe here an antigen-specific factor capable of replacing T cells in anti-SRBC antibody synthesis in vitro.
