PubMed1 is the key retrieval engine for Medline abstracts, and its host, the US National Library of Medicine (NLM; Bethesda, Maryland), provides efficient query interfaces. The result of queries is a list of abstracts, in which the most recent documents appear at the top. If the list is long, hardly anyone will pay attention to all the abstracts. This drawback led a group of us at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory/European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI; Hinxton, Cambridge, UK) to design a means of automatically processing Medline abstracts to extract and present relevant information only.
