The year 1996 was left out of the calculation of the absolute number of patents in the first section of the table. In Europe, a patent is published only 18 months after its deposit. The database was built in January 1998, and therefore was incomplete for the year 1996. However, 1996 figures were counted in the other calculations in order to estimate the most recent trends in patent applications.
Data on publications was extracted from the same database.
