Genetic variation of ANK3 is associated with lower white matter structural integrity in bipolar disorder

Lippard et al investigated the relationship between genetic variation in ANK3 and white matter fractional anisotropy in adolescents and adults with bipolar disorder. Variation in the ANK3 SNP rs9804190, specifically presence of a risk allele previously implicated by genome-wide association studies as conferring risk for bipolar disorder, was associated with lower frontotemporal white matter fractional anisotropy within bipolar disorder, independent of age and sex. Participants were scanned on a 3T Siemens Trio MR scanner and diagnostic group by genotype and effects of genotype within group were modeled with Statistical and Parametric Mapping (SPM).
