These depend on the relative nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) expression on DA and GABA cells. Upper left: Absence of nAChR. Lower left: nAChR on GABA cells induces inhibition. Upper right: nAChR on DA cell induces phasic activation. Lower right: nAChR on both DA and GABA cells induces bursting and nicotine reinforcement. Each cigarette schematises a DA spike.
