Geochemical evidence of a massive slide in the southern Norwegian Sea

Abstract

During the 1981 cruise of the MS Tyro to the southern Norwegian Basin several piston-cores were collected for sedimentological research. Some of these were available for geochemical study (Fig. 1). In laboratory analyses the pore water composition of one of these cores showed evidence of input of non-saline water, whereas pore water in other cores from the same Basin did not give any indication of dilution with fresh water. Careful examination of the chemical constituents of the pore water and some parameters of the sediment, gives convincing evidence for the origin of the fresh water. The presence of non-saline water can be attributed to a massive slide of a coastal fresh-to-brackish sediment ‘slab’, with preservation of structural and pore water composition. This sliding is thought to have taken place about 12,000 to 15,000 years BP.
