Abstract
The variable star PG1159–035, discovered by McGraw et al.1, is the prototype of a new class of extremely hot pulsating degenerate stars. Here we present preliminary theoretical results indicating that the pulsation periods of these stars should be decreasing with an e-folding time of the order of 106 yr—a value directly reflecting their rapid cooling times. We point out that such a rapid change in period should be measurable on a time scale of 1–3 yr, and that such measurements should be a direct test of stellar evolution and pulsation theory for hot degenerate objects.
