On the nature of SS433

Abstract

THE report of large wavelength variations associated with SS4331 illustrates the large amount of information to be gleaned from preliminary data when effects large enough to involve the theory of relativity are present. It seems most plausible to interpret the large periodic wavelength variations in the Balmer lines of this object as arising from periodic motion, requiring, as a result of its magnitude, the special relativistic Doppler formula for its interpretation. Here we comment on some recent observations that have made it possible to make quantitative estimates of some aspects of the model.
