X-ray emission from the companion to V861Sco

Abstract

THE Copernicus satellite has observed V861Sco (Hr6283, Spectrum; B0.5 Ia, V = 6.2, BV = +0.28, UV = −0.72) as part of a programme devoted to the study of mass transfer in binary star systems. The programme described here uses the Princeton UV telescope1 to make detailed measurements of absorption lines in the UV spectra of such stars. X-ray measurements are made simultaneously with a co-aligned proportional counter2.
