Highly conserved DNA of Ti plasmids overlaps T-DNA maintained in plant tumours

Abstract

LARGE tumour-inducing (Ti) plasmids in Agrobacterium tumefaciens1 are responsible for crown gall disease in dicotyledonous plants2,3. Plant tumour cells cultivated in vitro in the absence of the inciting bacterium maintain multiple copies of part of the Ti plasmid4,5. The experiments presented here show that part of the Ti plasmid maintained in tumour cells (T-DNA) is highly conserved among diverse Ti plasmids.
