On the occurrence of phosphosilicates

Abstract

TOFIELD et al.1, in describing the preparation of VO(P2SiO8) suggested that ‘condensed phosphosilicates may be a more extensive class of materials than has previously been suspected’. Hitherto only two compounds have been shown by structure determination to contain condensed phosphosilicate anions: VO(P2SiO8) itself2,3, which contains linked silicate and phosphate tetrahedra, and (NH4)2SiP4O13 (ref. 4), in which the silicon is in octahedral coordination. The synthesis of feldspars containing phosphorus has recently been reported5, some of which must contain Si–O–P links. The only other established occurrences of such links are in the silicon phosphates6–8. We describe here our attempts to prepare further examples of phosphosilicates.
