Abstract
OBSERVATIONS of the recurrence of a previously known transient X-ray source 4U0115+63 (ref. 1) using SAS 3, and our discovery that it pulsates with a period of 3.61 s (ref. 2) are reported here. We also give a measurement of the source position3 which is precise to ∼30 arc s and which has led directly to the identification of a likely optical counterpart4,5. A preliminary determination of the orbital elements of the binary system has been made from measurements of the Doppler variations of the pulse period and has yielded an orbital period of ∼24d (ref. 5).
