Abstract
CHARPAK1 points out in his review on multi-wire proportional chambers, that despite previous considerations2 there is some evidence that the discharge in a proportional chamber does not necessarily spread uniformly round the wire. We have been examining in some detail avalanche localisation in proportional chamber operation during the past year or so, and give here a brief quantitative account of some of our findings. These were initially rather unexpected.
