Recombination of CH genes encoding the M1 (IgM) and G1 (IgG) chicken allotypes

Abstract

IMMUNOGLOBULIN heavy chain (H-chain) genes in the mouse are organised in two linked clusters of VH and CH genes respectively. The VH cluster is considered relatively large since several cross-overs of alleles within the VH or between VH and CH allogroups have been reported (reviewed by Weigert and Potter1). On the other hand, CH genes controlling the Ig isotypes consist of rigid combinations of alleles (allogroups) for which no recombinants were found in several thousands of backcross mouse segregants2,3. In the chicken two closely linked loci (M1 and G1) control the allotypic markers of IgG and IgM heavy chains respectively4–6. The combination of allelic groups in some of the above tested strains indicated that cross-over events are likely to have occurred in their evolution4. We report here that recombinant phenotypes have been found between segregants of an F2 progeny of allotype homozygous strains. The cross-over event was confirmed in one rooster by further mating and testing of progeny. As far as we know this is the first report of a cross-over event between CH allogroups.
