Deep-sea carbonate and the deglaciation preservation spike in pteropods and foraminifera

Abstract

The aragonite compensation depth fluctuated considerably during the last 20,000 yr. This fluctuation culminated in a preservation spike at about 14,000 yr BP. The aragonite preservation stratigraphy parallels that in calcitic foraminifera, and constitutes part of a worldwide phenomenon signalling considerable changes in ocean chemistry and providing a useful tool for correlation.
