Primary structure of human β-lipotropin

Abstract

AFTER the discovery and isolation of β-lipotropin from sheep pituitary glands1,2, the hormone has also been obtained in highly purified form from bovine3, porcine4–6, and human7,8 pituitaries. The complete amino acid sequences of ovine9,10 and porcine11–13 hormones have been proposed. To gain insight into the evolutionary history of lipotropins and their structure–function relationships, and in view of recent data on the opiate agonist activity of peptide fragments from β-lipotropin14,15, we report here the complete amino acid sequence of the human hormone.
