Abstract
THE physiology of lettuce seed germination has been a subject of extensive study, but very little is known of the fundamental biochemical events which occur during germination. Here we report that the endosperm cell wall is largely composed of a mannose polymer (that is, a man-nan); and that germinating seeds produce an enzyme capable of its breakdown.
