Abstract
A DISTINCTIVE characteristic of IgA is its polymorphic nature with regard to the molecular size. It occurs in secretions mostly as a dimer or tetramer1,2 while serum IgA has a polydisperse weight distribution in many species1. It is mostly monomeric in human serum (7S) (ref. 3), mostly polymeric in the mouse4 and in the dog5, but in both these and other species several molecular sizes occur in the blood1.
