Immunological distinction between the possible origins of enzymatic activity in a polypeptide fragment of staphylococcal nuclease

Abstract

WE have used an immunological approach to demonstrate that the residual enzymatic activity in a large polypeptide fragment of staphylococcal nuclease is an intrinsic property of the fragment and not an artefact due to contamination with intact enzyme. These results are consistent with present concepts of the folding of polypeptide fragments to form structures similar to the native protein and may offer a method for the investigation of other macromolecular systems.
