Abstract
THE liver is well known for its role in the catabolism of a variety of plasma glycoproteins1. Liver-mediated clearance of a tumour glycoprotein antigen, the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) associated with human gastrointestinal adenocarcinomas2, has been demonstrated in dogs and rabbits3. Since circulating CEA is being extensively investigated for its diagnostic value in the detection of cancer patients, we were prompted to determine the metabolism of CEA in a xenogeneic species which supports the growth of a CEA-producing colonic cancer.
