Abstract
WE have established in culture a cloned line of hamster ductus deferens cells that contains a saturable, high affinity testosterone receptor protein. These cells exhibit an increased rate of DNA synthesis in response to testosterone and 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) treatment, although they probably do not require either androgen for survival. We believe this is the first description of a cloned cell line that exhibits a growth response to a physiological dose of androgen. The mechanism of action of the steroid may be similar to that in the normal tissue of origin.
