Design and Synthesis of Controlled Release Pesticide-Polymer Combinations

Abstract

ALTHOUGH the indiscriminate dissemination of pesticides into terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems is reprehensible, the magnitude of the pest control problem will necessitate the use of these materials for the foreseeable future. Persistent pesticides are undesirable because of their frequent incorporation into the food chain1–3 On the other hand, pesticides with short lives tend to be ineffective. In both cases, the amounts applied are often grossly in excess of that actually required to control the pest because of the need to compensate for pesticide loss by leaching and evaporation. We have therfore investigated the potential of pesticide-polymer combinations as a means of securing controlled release of a biodegradable pesticide in approximately the correct amount needed over an appropriate period of time.
