New Carbon-14 Evidence for Six Hundred Years Old Canna compacta Seed

Abstract

THE longevity of a viable seed of Canna considered to be about 550 years old1–3 has been questioned by Godwin4. The specimen, enclosed in a Juglans australis nutshell forming part of a rattle necklace was collected from tomb 92 in Santa Rosa de Tastil, Argentina. New carbon-14 dates presented here, on the nutshell and a trash heap, confirm this to be the oldest viable seed known.
