Cannabis Alkaloids

Abstract

SCORES of studies scrutinizing psychotropic phenolic terpenoids (cannabinol derivatives) of Cannabis sativa L. (Moraceae) have diverted attention from the possible presence of other potentially active classes of compounds, such as alkaloids, in marijuana. Recently, simple nitrogenous zwitterionic compounds (muscarine, choline and trigonelline) as well as volatile, low molecular weight piperidines have been isolated from several related species including hemp1–4. But more complex compounds of the alkaloid type have not been reported.
