Localization of A Antigen Sites on Human Erythrocyte Ghosts

Abstract

DETAILED immunochemical knowledge of the heterosaccharide antigen determinants of the ABO blood groups has been gained from the study of glycoproteins of mammalian secretions 1–3. Less is known about the chemical composition and spatial distribution of the ABO antigen determinants in erythrocyte membranes. Because the erythrocytes envelope appears as a uniform unit membrane after positive staining4, standard electron microscopy has failed to relate the ABO antigen sites to any discrete membrane structure5.
