Abstract
IN animal cells the synthesis of ribosomal RNA follows a definite molecular pattern. The two ribosomal RNA subunits, 28S and 18S RNA, are synthesized in the nucleolus as a large 45S molecule1,2. The latter is rapidly cleaved into an 18S molecule and into a 32S molecule. The 18S molecule reaches the cytoplasm immediately. The 32S molecule is converted into a 28S molecule in the nucleolus before reaching the cytoplasm3.
