Emperor Fracture Zone: a Newly Discovered Feature in the Central North Pacific

Abstract

SOUNDINGS by ESSA's Pacific Oceanographic Research Laboratory during 1968 and 1969 reveal a large north-west trending fracture zone east of the Emperor seamounts in the central North Pacific (Fig. 1). Bathymetric charts, based on rather sparse data, show traces of the feature as isolated deeps1 or as possible continuations of a southwest trending Chinook trough2.
