Direct Calorimetric Measurement of the Heats of Solution of some Liquid Hydrocarbons in Water

Abstract

KNOWLEDGE of the thermodynamic properties of aqueous solutions of hydrocarbons is important for the development of theories of hydrophobic hydration and hydrophobic bonding1. Accepted values of the heats of solution of these compounds have almost invariably been estimated from solubilities by the Van't Hoff procedure2–7, but because experimental and theoretical uncertainties are inherent in this method, it is clearly desirable to attempt a direct measurement of these heats.
