Abstract
NICOTINAMIDE adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) and reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) are important participants in enzymatic redox reactions1,2 (Fig. 1). Deuterium labelling experiments have shown direct and reversible transfer of hydrogen between substrate and position 4 of the nicotinamide ring of NAD+, to give one or the other of the configurations shown below3,4.
