Abstract
WE have previously reported1 the synthesis of 4,4′-di-n-butyl-2,2′-bipyridyl (L) and its complexes with lanthanide nitrates. We now find that the complex [Eu(NO3)3L2] in chloroform solution undergoes fairly rapid exchange with added free ligand The reaction rate is independent of the concentration of added ligand and this is in accord with a dissociative mechanism The thermodynamic parameters of activation are as follows: ΔG‡ = + 15.0 kcal/mole; ΔH‡ = + 6.4 kcal/mole; ΔS‡= −28.9 cal/deg/mole and K1 = 58 sec−1 at 25°.
