Abstract
THE two methods most commonly used to produce repopulation after irradiation are: (1) exogenous colonization, or “grafting”, by the injection of healthy haematopoietic tissue into a heavily irradiated recipient1–3; (2) endogenous colonization accomplished by the shielding of haematopoietic tissue4,5. In comparing these two techniques, Porteous and Lajtha6 concluded that, after radiation, exocolonization—involving considerable cellular handling—gives a different pattern of recovery from that observed with endocolonization.
