Bond Character in Germanium Selenides by X-ray Spectroscopy

Abstract

X-RAY spectroscopy provides a direct and powerful method of studying the electronic structure of solids1. It has been applied so far mainly in the investigations of energy band structure of solids2–4 (mostly metals and alloys) and in the study of complexes5–7. This communication, which reports our work on the K absorption spectra of selenium and germanium in GeSe and GeSe2, shows that this method can also be useful in determining the nature of chemical bonding in intermetallic compounds which are of special interest because of their semiconducting properties.
