Carbon-14 Labelled Photosynthate in Wheat Root Exudates

Abstract

THERE is abundant evidence that organic compounds are exuded from the roots of intact plants1, but the amounts are small, and to obtain sufficient material for identification even by paper chromatography it is necessary to collect, exudates from a large number of plants or from one plant over a long period. To overcome these difficulties a sensitive method using radioactive labelling has been developed which enables short-term studies on the exudation by roots of individual wheat plants to be used.
