‘Cure’ of Crithidia (Strigomonas) oncopelti of its Bacterial Endosymbiote

Abstract

EARLY work on the comparative biochemistry and nutrition of the lower Trypanosomatidae revealed that one organism, Crithidia (Strigomonas, Herpetomonas, Leptomonas) oncopelti differed from the other members of the group: C. oncopelti had strikingly simpler nutritional requirements than the other haemoflagellates1. Indeed, C. oncopelti synthesized rather than required haemin1 and appeared to require only four2,3 rather than twelve or more amino-acids as did other members of the family4. These nutritional anomalies have remained unexplained for about twenty-five years.
