Abstract
SUCCINYL choline was shown by Bovet et al.1 to be a neuromuscular blocking agent with a short duration of action. Its brief action is considered to be due to its hydrolysis by the pseudocholinesterase which is present in plasma. Hydrolysis occurs in two steps; first, succinyl monocholine is formed, then this compound is degraded to succinic acid and choline. The first step in the sequence proceeds faster than the second; further, succinyl monocholine has very little biological activity. The removal of the first choline moiety must consequently be considered as important in the biological inactivation of the compound.
