High-temperature Minerals in Non-metamorphosed Sediments in Israel

Abstract

AN unusual mineral assemblage was recently found in a sedimentary rock sequence of Maastrichtian to Palæocene age, the so-called ‘Mottled Zone’, in Israel and adjoining parts of Jordan1. This formation is known to occur in at least four widely separated places: the Hatrurim basin west of the Dead Sea, the Beersheba valley in the northern Negev, the Ramlah area in the coastal plain, and at Ma'aleh Adumim in the Jordanian part of the Judean desert.
