Cheek Pouch of the Syrian Hamster and Immunity to Heterotransplantation of a Murine Leukæmia

Abstract

THE consistent failure of AK–4 leukæmia of the AKR mouse to grow in the cheek pouches of normal or cortisone-treated hamsters is in contrast to the routine hetero-transplantability of certain other murine leukæmias1,2. Other investigations in these laboratories have demonstrated the accelerated rejection of second-set AK-4: hetero-grafts in the cheek pouch, suggesting that the primary inability of the neoplasm to grow in hamster pouches is attributable to an immune response on the part of the host3. Since a method for successfully transplanting AK–4: in lethally irradiated hamsters has been devised4, in which cell suspensions of the leukæmia are introduced intravenously by orbital puncture, the hamster's acquisition of immunity to the neoplasm may be examined not only with the leukæmia undergoing rejection3, but also with the leukæmia actively growing.
